Aging Fashionistas

Society often treats older people – particularly women – as though we should fade into the background. Whimsical patterns, bright colours and statement pieces are an intentional way to remain visible and vibrant. As I get older I’ve become part of the trend too – I navigate towards bold colourful or whimsical clothing and accessories. I’m not looking for external approval anymore, I want to express personal joy and freedom. From bold colourful glasses to statement jewelry pieces, there’s a movement happening in the 55+ crowd.

New York City has a vibrant culture of senior fashionistas who challenge traditional ideas of aging through bold style, maximalism and creative self-expression. I’m inspired by the likes of the late Iris Apfel, the photography of Ari Seth Cohen and digital artist Jonas Peterson. It’s not just in New York – the movement is spreading everywhere.

That’s the inspiration behind Senior Fashionistas – a series of small whimsical figures (3″ x 7-8″) celebrating being a woman, age and fashion. They will be debuting for the first time in public at Sculpture EXPO, October 17 & 18, 2026 at the Glebe Community Centre in Ottawa. These original pieces will be available exclusively in the boutique area for $75. each. A perfect gift for yourself or the fashionista in your life.
